Friends of the Refuge Headwaters Mission
Who we are: The Friends of the Refuge Headwaters is a citizen-based, non-profit organization.
What we do: We work with and support the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge - Winona District in meeting the refuge vision and goals.
The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is the longest river refuge in the continental U.S. at 261 miles. The refuge begins at the confluence of the Chippewa River near Wabasha, Minnesota, and ends near Rock Island, Illinois, touching four states along its boundary.
The Winona District focuses on the 50 miles of refuge headwaters from the Chippewa River to Trempealeau, WI (Pools 4, 5, 5A & 6). The refuge vision states that the Refuge is beautiful, healthy, and supports abundant and diverse native fish, wildlife, and plants for the enjoyment and thoughtful use of current and future generations. This vision is realized through six major goals: landscape; environmental health; wildlife and habitat; wildlife-dependent public use; other recreational use; and administration and operations.
You can find out more about the purpose of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refugehere and here.
