Volunteer Opportunity: Reed canary grass study

The refuge's biological program is in need of assistance during the week of August 10. The project is monitoring reed canary grass study plots near Kellogg, MN. You would be asked to count reed canary stems in the plots, but if you have botanical identification skills you will also be asked to estimate cover and identifying species in the plot.

You would be needed for the entire day, leaving the refuge shop (Kansas Street in Winona) about 8 a.m. and returning at 4 p.m. There are no bathrooms and it's about a 15 minute walk into the site. Plan on carrying in your lunch. Depending on the amount of rain the week before, knee boots may be needed.
Helping one day during the week would be a huge help to the refuge. Please contact Cortney White at 507-454-7351, she is maintaining the list of volunteers. If you would like more information about the project, please call Refuge Biologist, Lisa Reid at 507-494-6234.
